The Universal Longing
Every one of us has felt some version of this longing deep inside. It may feel like you just know there is something more, something you are missing, but you don’t know just what it is. Or you are disillusioned because things you thought would make you happy just leave you feeling unfulfilled. Perhaps it is more acutely painful than that–an ache in the pit of your soul, a physical sense of not belonging, and an inability to fill that void, leading to depression or addictions.
What is the deepest longing of your soul? If you really examine the feelings, and peel back the layers you will find it. Under the desire for material things lies the need for more essential qualities- a desire for security, comfort, and peace; to feel valued and purposeful. And under all that is the need to know that we belong, as an integral part of something much greater than our single human self, and that longing is for union. When we are able to access that, it meets all the other needs that drive our behavior and quiets those fears. We all have these core fears– which are yours? I don’t belong. I am not loved. I am alone. I am not worthy. I am not enough. I am too much. I am not safe. I am lost. And on.
Most of us are taught to ignore these feelings. Instead of learning how to manage them, we are diagnosed with ‘anxiety’ and medicated. But this is the human condition. If you have these feelings, you are not crazy or wrong. When we reject this part of ourselves, alienating from our own inner self, it only compounds the problems.
There are ways to access what we long for. The path requires an inner journey. The first step is giving yourself permission to explore your inner realms, liberating yourself from the shackles of convention. Recognize that your spirit is part of who you are- not just your personality. There is untamed wisdom within. Are you ready to explore it?
